Anglo-Scottish Family History Society

The Anglo-Scottish FHS was formed in 1982 by members of the M&L FHS to assist in tracing their links back to Scottish origins. We have members in the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. We are full members of the Scottish Association of Family History Societies and send a representative to their meetings in Edinburgh.

MEETINGS

Our meetings are held on the third Saturday of every month (except December) at 2.0 pm in the Society's library at Clayton House, Piccadilly, when there is an invited speaker, a talk by one of our members, or workshops and discussions. The library is open from 11.0 am for members' own research, when experienced members are available for advice and guidance.

We have exhibited at the North West Group of Family History Societies' fair for several years and members regularly attend the annual conferences of the Scottish Association at various venues in Scotland, including Inverness, Aberdeen, Glasgow and Kelso. Local members are volunteers in the library.

See the meeting programme below.

JOURNAL

Our quarterly Bulletin is now incorporated into the main Society's journal "The Manchester Genealogist". We have articles of particular Scottish interest and news from Scottish repositories and libraries. We also accept members' queries for publication.

LIBRARY

The ASFHS has full use of the main Society's library and study room which is open during the week and certain weekends. We have the 1992 IGI for Scotland by county and the 1981 edition by country. We also have the complete OPR indexes (old parish registers) by county.

The library contains a comprehensive collection of Scottish books including the Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland, Blacks "History of Scottish Surnames", Edinburgh's Old Town 1851 census and many published and transcript memorial inscriptions.

We also hold typed transcripts of baptismal and communion rolls of the early Scottish churches in Manchester. Jim Beckett, a founder member, has compiled a Soldiers Index of Chelsea Pensioners, very many of whom were of Scottish origin.

PUBLICATIONS

ASFHS has published five volumes of Scottish Emigrants into England and Wales and a Digest of library sources of Scottish Genealogy in the Manchester Central Library.

We also have the full use of the main Society's Bookshop where many books of Scottish interest are sold and which may also be ordered by mail order.

Please note details about the Spouses are listed under their own name.

One of the stumbling blocks for any family historian trying to trace Scottish ancestors is when those ancestors have emigrated, or it is suspected that they have emigrated when the trace is lost.  Or it could be that descendants of someone outside Scotland  are trying to trace the family back in Scotland.

The Society have built a database based on a marriage because recording details of the couple and their parents, gives, in most cases, four family names, the place where the Scot was born,  the place where they were married and the dates of the events.  The database is called The Scottish Marriage Index and can be accessed here, on this site.

The majority of the  marriages listed here took place outside Scotland.  However as some contributors sent in every marriage involving a Scots-born person in their family tree, then many of the marriages, celebrated abroad, are linked to their roots back in Scotland.

If you wish to make contact with the person who contributed a particular marriage, then e-mail Dan Muir at the address below quoting the Source Number.   If there is no Source Number then it means that we do not have a contact address.

If you would like your family details listed then send the following data to danmuir@ntlworld.com

Names of the couple (send details of both, even if only one is Scots-born) their dates and places of birth, the names of their parents, the date and place of marriage.  Your postal address.
