Lancashire Births, Deaths and Marriage Index

MLFHS is involved in project work to produce an index of births, deaths and marriages from the records at our local Register Offices.

This brief outline is intended to explain what we are doing in this regard at Oldham Register Office with the cooperation of the local Registrars.

Marriages

An Index of marriages from 1837 to 1974 previously compiled by the staff at the office has been made available to us and can now be searched on the Lancashire BMD website.(www.lancashirebmd.org.uk) At the moment there is no plan to extend this but it is a distinct future possibility.

Births

Since 2001 we have been making steady progress compiling an index from July 1837 and currently we have the index online to1950. The rate of progress is approximately 15 years of indexing per year of effort. The work is done by a team of volunteers working in the Register Office. The Office has no computerised index until 1991, so that is the gap we need to fill. Files are available for years beyond 1991 but need some work doing which is not on our current schedule.

Details of the work we our doing on the births and of the current status of work in progress can be read at www.ecwood.co.uk/BMD

Deaths

Work started on the Death Indexing in 2005 but by a different method than Birth Indexing. At the time of writing the  Index online consists of 4500 entries in the Royton Sub District covering deaths in the period 1837 to 1861.
