About GFHS

Tracing Family History in Glamorgan since 1974

The Glamorgan Family History Society acts as a focal point for anyone who may be interested in Family History and Genealogy, not just those whose roots are in Glamorgan. Many members live within the historic county, but equally, many live far beyond its boundaries. View our current officers and committee members.

At monthly meetings, members share experiences, sort out problems, exchange information and enjoy the guest speakers whose topics cover Family History research and records, and the many related aspects such as Local History, Customs, Notable Inhabitants etc. Beginners' Nights are included in each year's Programme.

Society Members help with the various on-going projects - dealing with the transcription and indexing of relevant Glamorgan documents and records. The results, produced in booklet & microfiche, are available to all members world wide, and are a great help in gaining access to vital sources of information. There is also an index of surnames in which members have an interest

About the Aberkenfig Resource Centre (ARC)

The ARC is within easy reach of the M4 Junction 36 and about the middle of the old county of Glamorgan

The Centre holds an extensive collection of Glamorgan material, including our own publications, together with an increasing amount of data relating to other Welsh and English counties as well as a variety of pedigrees, maps and unpublished indexes donated by members

The library has a wide selection of books and journals to browse, covering family and social history of the local area as well as its archaeology, art and architecture. The material in the library extends to cover the rest of Wales, England, Scotland, and Ireland; with further - although more limited – books and journals from overseas. We also have a very large collection of parish registers, and monumental inscriptions available for research. In addition you can buy a copy of some items for personal use at home, either as CDs, booklets, or fiche

We have a collection of 'unwanted' birth, marriage and death certificates.

A number of computers are available at the ARC to allow researchers access to the internet and to FindmyPast. Computers must be booked in advance of your visit to ensure availability as we are often very busy at the centre
